I just wanted to share the most amazing t-shirts for men and women I had the pleasure of discovering at the Brookhaven Arts Festival this past weekend. The company is Indiepeace.com and the shirts are not only eco-friendly (organic cottons) but the designs and fit are fantastic! I really respect what this company is doing and plan on wearing the heck out of them. I posted some examples of my graphic design work. This collection is just a sample of the various projects I have worked on. My most memorable project was the 25th anniversary "livery" for Comair Airlines. (You can search "25th Anniversary Comair Airplane on Google for more images). The design for the exterior of the airplane was an amazing challenge and I was able to see the plane finished and up-close in the aircraft hangar. The company was gracious enough to allow myself, the account manager and project manager to ride on the plane's inaugural flight. The team that took my design and applied it to the airplane was truly amazing. Artists in every sense of the word! :-) I hope you enjoy the graphic design images! Eric

Some Thoughts and Ramblings: July 2008

After going back to work in April of 2008 as an art director with the design firm I used to work at, I realized how deep my love of art goes. When I opened the gallery in 2003, it was with the desire to connect people with art. I was not really interested in the monetary side of having a gallery or selling art, but more in the experiences of people when they are able to view art. I am intrigued by how people respond to works of art, be it positive or negative in nature. Each person has their unique approach, perception and emotion when viewing works of art and there is nothing better than being a part of that person's experience. I am always amazed, however, by the sheer number of people who are totally unaware of art in their surroundings. Do they really just not see it or the beauty in it? Or is it their "awareness" of themselves and their surroundings that clouds their visual eye? Working in advertising, I think many people are caught in "sensory overload" and need a break from the bombardment of messages. Whatever the case, I find it fascinating! Please continue to check back here if you enjoy the blog. I am planning the October 2008 show and am taking the gallery into a more contemporary direction for awhile. New works, new artists and many things to see and experience! I hope you will be a part of it! Eric

The Open Gallery Show last night was a great night of friends and art enthusiasts enjoying new works on display. Featured artists included: Rodney White original paintings and print reproductions, one-of-a-kind (and truly beautiful) sculptures by Holden McCurry, original drawings and reproductions by Josef Weber (my father), color and black-and-white photography by Jeff Keesee, a limited-edition quilt by Nancy Marie, amazing mixed media works from Clayton Santiago and Clint Bearden, Gregg Carson acrylics, "heart" magnets by Terrie Tschetter and the newest addition to the gallery, David Howland, whose contemporary and brightly-colored vertical stripe works are being very well received by many clients. It was an amazing night and despite a bit of a tornado scare (do a quick search for downtown/atlanta/tornado) the show opened and is on display until mid-June. Enjoy the pictures and look for more of them to come on our latest salon and gallery upgrades!

Some years ago I was introduced to an artist named Rodney White. (www.rodney-white.com) He is an amazing creative talent that couldn't be composed any better than within him. Being a graphic designer, I was instantly stuck with the colors, compositions and messages. I consider him a creative role-model that will be one of the most popular artists currently and in the years to come. Through an ongoing relationship with his gallery and manager, E•Weber Gallery is showcasing and selling select available paintings from Rodney White. Birdhouses by Michael Weber

While I am on the subject of family and the gallery, I wanted to post some pictures of the beautiful birdhouses, custom designed and made by hand, that are available at the gallery. Each limited-edition (1/1) house is custom designed and truly original. My older brother, Michael, is an amazing artist and craftsman and each of the houses showcased at the gallery represents his collaboration with his wife, Paige-she creates the beautiful finishes-lots of scrap wood, metal, composition and detail. These birdhouses typically sell for $200 - $600 depending on size, finish and level of detail. For me, personally, they evoke a sense of lightheart and elegant whimsy. Something a buyer will enjoy for many years.

The Weber House in Remlap, Alabama

Perhaps the most enjoyable of my father's works is the house and studio he designed, engineered and built in Remlap, Alabama. For those of you wondering where that is, it is approximately 45 minutes north of Birmingham, about half-way between Pinson and Oneonta. The house was a labor of love/hate for the entire Weber family. All of us–my mother, my oldest brother, older brother and myself–the youngest, had a part in building the house. My aunt and other family members and friends also worked on it and were also always such a big help and support. Its the kind of place I look at now and think "How amazing that his dream became a reality for all of us to experience!" I also take great pride in spending time there working on my own artwork. The great thing is that his vision and determination resulted in a real "home" for each of us. Its a very inspiring place with 8 acres of country roads, mountains and fresh air. Not to mention some great mountain and sky views! I posted some pictures so you can see what I'm describing.

Having a European bloodline is very cool for a southern guy! It explained why our house in the neighborhood had the only 8-foot TV antenna on the roof when most homes were already part of the "cable" conglomerate. Or why it was such a thrill when we got a touch-tone telephone! My parents bought only the best quality when they made a purchase, and it was truly an excellent strategy. Things lasted. We were a conservative (ie: money), yet liberal (ie: I had some beers at 16 in Germany), family of 5. Being the youngest had some advantages, but I was the last to leave the home nest. To this day, I miss those days living at home. Having an artistic father that was always welding something in his studio downstairs or drawing plans for his dream house kept me focused on art and design. He was such an amazing talent and so gifted.

The painting on the next post is a study he did on generations. It is such an amazing way to capture a little piece of the past. It will be on display in the gallery soon and should be a real conversation piece. Especially since I am sitting there on my grandmother's lap as a fat-n-tight little sausage baby!

My History in Art: From My Father

I developed a love for art at a very early age. My father, Josef Weber, was born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands (or Holland) near the same town as was Vincent Van Gogh. I have been to the intimate streets of those towns and there is an indescribable picturesque quality to everything. Artists seem to be born there, or shaped there. My mother, Vera Weber, was a 21-year-old new transplant in the United States from Hamburg, Germany, and like my father, came to this country seeking a better life after surviving many years of pre and post-War devastation in Europe. They met and married and settled the family in Birmingham, Alabama in 1971. All in all, the Webers were a bit the "odd" family on the Baptist streets of Center Point, Alabama.

My father was always making art in some shape, form or fashion. He was either hacking away at a large treestump, etching off pieces of marble on the back porch to reveal the form underneath or simply sketching life as it passed. I don't really remember ever seeing him stop creating something. He was an amazing engineer with patents, degrees and overwhelming creative energy. The land and his custom-built house in Remlap, Alabama later became his gift to our family. I became very close with his artwork and sketching journals after he died in 2002 of a brain tumor. He was 67. It was the hardest time in my 36 years but it reaffirmed my love of art and visual concepts. Later, it was in his honor that I started the gallery and began displaying many of his diverse works. Integrating the salon and the gallery was an interesting process that affirmed many decisions. Art can truly be given the proper context and attention and people will notice no matter what the setting. It has truly been an inspiration to see how others respond to my father's artistic creations on display and the many shows the gallery has opened. And it gives me such a sense of pride to have been given the gift of art from my father!

Art can bring people together in so many ways. Art opens the doors to so many creative avenues. It grasps your mind and heart and connects with your creative spirit. The connection that happens never gets old and it never fades. Art is truly a life-long enjoyment that is hard to price in dollars and cents. Its value is immeasurable when it connects with you. It is with this philosophy that the gallery officially opens its NEW doors to another 5 great years ahead!
